Biography

Florian Angert has a background in long-distance swimming (200–1500 m freestyle) at national elite level. After high school he was encouraged to try a local triathlon and performed far beyond expectations. Just a year later, he stole headlines by finishing 3rd in Frankfurt City Triathlon, where he finished on the bike ahead of superstar Kienle. Florian then became part of the talent team at Team Erdinger Alkoholfrei, which was replaced with a PRO license in 2017. His big breakthrough came in 2018 with two 70.3 victories, which could even have been three if Zell am See had not been forced to cancel the bike leg after massive precipitation and landslides.

At the end of 2019, Florian made his debut in the Ironman distance in Barcelona with a spectacular power performance. The time of 7:45:05 was by far the fastest Ironman debut at the time and is still among the fastest legit* Ironman times ever, despite a significant increase in the level over the past two years.

*Legit refers to a correctly measured route, where the times are not affected by particularly favourable wind or currents.

Fun fact

As a former top swimmer, it’s no wonder that Florian has picked the very competent Daniel Bækkegård as his training partner. They trained together in the weeks leading up to IM Tulsa in May 2021, and afterwards Florian was in Odense for a few weeks for some competent sparring with Bækkegård.
